Making volcanoes

How to make your own volcano!! You will need:

1 large jam jar with lid (cook in sauce size)
Vinegar
Bicarbonate of soda
Red food colouring
Soil (you can use sand or clay) and leaves/twigs
Tray to build the volcano on

First we placed the jar on a tray and built a mound up to the neck with soil. Then we decorated the mound with twigs and leaves to create our own small mountain

We carefully remove the jar lids and filled the jars three quarters full with vinegar. We then added a few drops of red food colouring and then bicarbonate of soda a teaspoon at a time.

Our volcanoes then started to 'erupt'! We kept adding bicarbonate of soda until the lava stopped flowing.

It was a great activity, lots of fun and quite exciting too!
